IMO saying the US the GREATEST country is just plain ignorant and self centered. I agree US is one of the greatest countries in the world, but certainly not the greatest. I have listed countries that can be considered among the greatest countries in the world (of course I have missed a few like Japan, Australia, etc)
There were multiple reasons why I worked here:
- I am currently working here because I went to college here. US has one of the best college educations in the world.
- Great work opportunities
- Personal reasons such as: my brother was here, so I chose to go to the US instead of going to UK or Australia
i used to think the USA was the greatest country in the world...i've been doubting myself for about 7 years now.

Pros:
- One of the best economy and financial institutions in the world, highly flexible and transparent and robust
- Has the best colleges in the world (even though starting to see more issues)
- Best work opportunities, career advancements, etc
- Best medical care if you can afford it
- ability to chase the "american dream"
- etc
Drawbacks
- cost of living is fairly high (but you make more so it kind of makes up for it)
- more and more issues in education, especially public education
- politics issues such as the iraq war, budget deficit, how more and more we are turning into extreme ideologism (sp?)
- american dream is harder and harder to get, both parents have to work to be able to buy a house
- hard to start a business with all of the regulations (fire code, labor issues, etc)
- retarded immigration policies
- etc
Of course these are my views, I might be biased

As a Canadian, I will say that the US is the greatest country in the world. However, that doesn't mean it's the greatest place to live; I sure as hell wouldn't wanna live there.

Yeah I never claimed it was the greatest country in the world, and I won't say it is. That's a wide-open statement. There are many ways in which the US is great, many in which the US is not so great. I just thought it was interesting that you and many other people come here when there are other, better countries out there.
