WDTV Live sorting problem

Anyone here using a WDTV? Finally got my WDTV Live hooked up to my network to access my Netgear ReadyNAS. I can see my movie files fine, but for the life of me I can't seem to change the way the files are sorted. Right now they are sorted by the date each file was created. Not the best way to organize 300+ movies... so I'd like to have them sorted alphabetically.

Any help?

I'll check my setting but mine are sorted alphabetically. Mine are sorted alphabetically on my computer as well so I wonder if they sort order of the original folder dictates how they are seen on the WD TV Live interface?

That could be the case, but the movies are stored on a NAS, which I don't think controls the sort method (and the files are sorted by name when viewed in Vista).

Make sure you go into settings and change the way it lists your movies to list mode instead of thumbnail. I just bought one a week ago and posted this review of it on Amazon:

This is a great little player for the money, it has played back all my HD movies in .mp4 and .mkv format just fine. It only had trouble with some Gundam anime that was in .avi format, it was artifacting and freezing the video while playing. VLC player on my computer played the Gundam anime just fine, but I read from other people this player can be picky with .avi files for whatever reason.

Some things you need to know, when you first get this make sure you connect it to the internet and update it. Also, go into the settings and change the default way it displays movies from thumbnail mode to list mode. This will make it much easier to browse movies, especially if you have an external hard drive connected that has tons of movies. Also, when watching a movie and you want to go to a part deep in the movie, hit fast forward and then while it is fast forwarding hit the next button and it will advance 10 minutes. I didn't know that until I read the manual. This product does not come with a manual, so go to the western digital site and download it and read it, you will learn what every thing does and how to work the media player better.

***********IMPORTANT***********If you plan on using network shares to access your media, you need to probably uninstall Windows Live ID Assistant. I tried for hours to find out why my WD TV Live wanted a name and password to access my shared movie files on my computer, until I read in a forum that several people had to remove Windows Live ID Assistant to finally got their network shares to show up. I went to control panel, add/remove programs and saw that I had it, I uninstalled it and my network shares showed up after hours of trying to figure out what my problem was. I have no idea why this program makes the WD TV Live want a name and password, but it does.

Overall, a nice media player for the money. The network share bug if Windows Live ID Assistant is installed is annoying, and hopefully they fix it with a firmware update so people don't agonize over why their network shares don't work like I did.

WD also just release a pre-release firmware upgrade for the WD Live. I don't think it specifically fixes your issue but thought I would mention in case someone is interested.

I'll try that tonight. Mine is hooked up to an external drive as well as a XP and Win7 computers. I have no issues with the external or XP but Win7 always wants an ID and password.

That would be outstandingly useful - I don't consider myself a n00b but it took me a few days of trial and error + forum registry edits to get win7 and the wdtv live to play nice together. To be fair my asus o-play had similar issues until a firmware update saved the day, so it looks like the issue isn't really anyones fault, just a symptom of win 7's different way of networking.

* I have the registry changes in a .reg file, if anyone wants it they can PM me

I recommend the custom firmware if you are computer savvy . The box runs linux and the custom firmware lets you access that providing telnet, ftp, http access and more.
Best of all is that you can mount drives via ip address and not have to mess with things like workgroups or computer names . OSD themes are also coming along nicely.

Using the custom firmware is really easy. Format a USB drive with Fat32. Put the custom files on the drive, when you turn on the WDTV Live it will ask if you want to update, select yes and let it finish.

You can change back to the retail firmware the same way .

some of the recent changes:

I installed the custom firmware and a) hated the wood grain theme and b) couldn't see any added functionality. I suggest skipping it unless you're a telnet /linux guru.. For all the potential of the box I find the custom firm weirdly lacking - why not work on new GUIs, web content, etc. etc.?

You didn't spend much time with the custom firmware. The creator of the custom firmware is a programmer not a content creator so he provided the tools so everyone else could add those things.

Read the forums I linked above and you will find all those things like new GUI.

Problem seems fixed. Did the Rescan Media option on the ReadyNas DLNA options, then rebooted it. Not sure which fixed the problem, but all is well now.

Hacked firmware interests me, but I'll give a WD firmware a chance first...

It is not the network settings that matter, the WD TV Live player throws a bitch fit if "Windows Live ID Assistant" is installed. Whenever you go to access a network share it will want a user name and password, no matter what you type in, it will say invalid user name and pass. As soon as you uninstall "Windows Live ID Assistant" you will be able to access your network shares, which are a little tricky to setup but at least the name and password problem is gone.

After uninstalling ID Assistant follow this guide to setup network shares properly: It worked for me:

Youtube Video on how to setup shares in windows 7:

Numerous people that have tried for days to get network shares working on the WD TV Live simply uninstalled ID Assistant and they worked. A few posts:

I got so many movies on my medi tank. I think the best way to organize these units is make 5-6 folders A-F G-L Etc...etc... you get the point. Or you could just make them for Sci-Fi, Romance, Comedy, etc...etc...

I have my movies in folders by decade [MOVIES 1980s] [MOVIES 1990s] [MOVIES 2000s]. Gotta make a [MOVIES 2010s] soon. I tried the [ACTION] [DRAMA] etc folders, (and I included brackets [] so that these folders are always sorted at the top) but it was too much of a hassle to move my movies based on genre.

Must be a pain to remember if a movie came out in 1989 vs 1990...
