I put neverwinter nights back on saturday and i was expirencing some really bad stuttering. it seemed that there was disk activity when it stutters. last time i had it on it ran perfectly smooth. after a fresh install of win xp pro i ran some benches. my 3dmark 2001 score was what i expected, about 10500. I noticed my file system benchmark in sandra was ridculously low, 14000 kB/s when i should be getting about 31000 kB/s ( and have before). I looked in my case and found i had a crap cable hooked up to it. I looked in my onboard raid bios and sure enough it was running at ata 33. So i replaced it with the proper cable and the raid bios reported ata 100. However my sandra file system benchmark only increased to 19000 kB/s. I've tried both running it off the raid controller and the ide controller, no luck. any ideas? (the hdd is on it's own channel)

here are my system specs:

Athlon 1900 XP
Epox 8k3a+ (11/1/2002 bios with optimized defaults)
2 x 256 samsung ddr333
Western Digital 80 gb special edition 8mb cache drive (wd800jb)
Gainward Geforce 4 4400
Phillips Acoustic Edge
2 x Linksys 10/100 ethernet nics
Windows XP Professional /w SP1
Detonator 41.09
via 4 in 1, 4.42

odd...I have the same drive and when running Nero Speed Test I get 47,000k for my main partition (50 gigs) and 27,000 for my secondary partition (20 gigs...the remain 6 I have saved for linux)

Though i dbout it'd make a differece

have you tried running a program to do a surface scan? Yeah it'll take a long time, but it might be worth it

Make sure you have the drive jumpered as 'single' instead of master if it's the only one on the cable. WD drives often perform poorly or not at all if you don't.

shouldn't it have a jumper regardless? Stick on a jumper as primary and see what happens
