Got this drive recently and installed windows xp sp3. Seems to freeze at times and hang. Never been able to get it to shut down properly.

Its a 640gb drive from Newegg, the two platter 16mb cache.

Im gonna reinstall xp again.

Any ideas if this is just a bad drive?

Download HDTune and check if there are bad sectors? I had freezing problems too when my WD started going bad with bad sectors.

Are you referring to "error check" in HD Tune?

If they are bad sectors, does that mean I need to get my HD replaced?

Depends on how many, if any are found. But if the drive is within the 30 day window for the egg...I'd be shipping it off.

That big dip in the beginning of your test is not normal.

The bad performance at the last 200GB on the short test is probably due to hard drive activity (Windows Update running, etc.) but to consistently have a huge dip at the exact same place - on the beginning of your drive no less - can be problematic.

You may want to try returning or RMA'ing the drive.

I've got two WD6400AAKS drives - one in my parents' computer, and one in an eSATA case to upgrade my PVR. Not only does it never cause system hangs or freezes, but it's the first drive I've found that runs problem and stutter free in the PVR, because a lot of other drives (like my Seagates) spin down to save power, which causes issues when connected to a PVR.

----------

What model is your motherboard? If it's an older one, make sure to update the BIOS. The 6400AAKS is a newer HD and sometimes they can be problematic in older SATA-equipped boards.

Well I had ordered two drives total. The other drivers works fine, I got an RMA with newegg for this one, so will send it back. On the error scan it came back with 1% of HD with error.

Thanks for your help guys!
