AFAIK the newer drives are better at writes while raptors have better reads (faster spin FTW)

Velociraptors will give faster OS boot time and slightly faster app loading times. Otherwise not so much different, beyond the obvious $/GB disparity.

which is why i'm asking which specific tasks is each hdd better at doing? and i'm talking about the cheapest 640gb 16mb cache drive u can find on newegg. i believe its still he one with 2 x 320gb platters

Here's a good review for you, including the 150GB Velociraptor, old 150GB Raptor, 640GB Caviar Blue, Samsung F1 drive, all matched up against a new Caviar Black 1TB drive.

If you're just going for storage the Blue is a great drive, if this is your primary OS boot drive the Black is probably a slightly better choice.

The Caviar Black 32MB drive has 2 320GB platters also.

Platters are the same, but the cache, controller (maybe) and the firmware are different, and are tuned for better performance than the "blue" drive.

Incidentally, a brand new Black 640GB I have at work keeps dropping off the RAID array it is on, but a replacement has not. Bummer.

i can't justify paying $15 more for the black version. i can't even find it on newegg, can someone link me? i'm just guessing its at least a $15 bump in price.

is the 150gb raptor still faster than the 640gb black in booting apps and an OS? i'd guesso..

I could justify it....

The newer black 640 supposedly runs cooler and at least slightly faster. 32mb buffer(which makes no difference) and 5 year warranty. 2 more years warranty for $15 would be worth it alone imo.
