I have two wd400bbs here.

one is wd400bb aua1 model.
second is wd400bb 76jhao model.

i used hd tech to test these two drives. unfortunately they are on different computers right now, so i dont' know if hd tach is dependent on other parts of the system to test these two 400bbs.

First one with aua1 ending tested on an nf2 board and the average read is 30mb/s.
teh 75jhao model was tested on a dell dimension 3000 and average read is 50mb/s.

I did the short and long test and they turn out the same results.

is there really a big difference in the same model drives ? or is my test affected by cpu,ram, fsb, etc.....

btw, the two systems are running on stock speeds, so there isn't any overclocking or anything like that. pci specs are at 33mhz for both systems?

anyone got an answer as to why the performance varies?

Obviously, the hdd performance will be affected by the mobo, cpu, ram and even as simple as bios settings and device settings. As John said, try both on the same platform and as much as possible same programs installed.

Two possibilities. One is that one drive really is faster. WD keeps the same model number across different designs, so a 400BB means:

400 = 40GB
1st B = 2MB cache
2nd B = 7200RPM

The platter density affects STR and your faster one may have higher density platters.

The other possibility is that the Intel chipset has better HDD performance.
