wd1200jb showing up as wd800bb???

ok to make a long story short, i had to change controller boards.
i have the same board revision and firmware number, and the drive
spins. but under xp it is coming up as a wd800bb drive for some reason.
the controller is not bad because it works on the drive i took it off of.

the reason im doing that is my board fried and i dont want to lose data.
i also cant really spend $600 to get it back. but is there any explanation
as to why my drive is showing up as a completely different drive?

ive tried many things, and when trying to install xp to the drive it says
that it cant be accessed, and thats booting off xp cd. under xp the drive wont
show up at all. its in the device manager but i cant format it or anything or even
see it through explorer.

ive tried to boot with the formatted new wd1200jb and then while still running
switching the drive. (as in taking the controller off the good one and putting it
on the bad without powering down.) it didnt hurt anything but it still wont access
the drive. even using file recovery software it wont access anything. and then
it freezes and the drive disappears.

this sucks. it took me a month to find the right controller board and it still doesnt work.
if anyone can help i would appreciate it GREATLY.
thanks

No offense, but that was a very bad idea. You probably fried something.

no it didnt fry anything. i thought it would too but somehow it didnt
the new one still works. so im still stuck.
no offense taken, i thought it was a dumb idea too, but was willing to
try anything. looks like im gonna be dropping like 600 to get my data
back.

Maybe the BIOS is reading the parameters off the board.
Can you manually input the parameters for the drive in the BIOS?
(try NOT using the auto setting)
YMMV
