Man, I just installed this WD1200JB and installed XP + Service Pack 1 + I installed the latest 4in1's.

What's going on???

HD Tach is showing maximum data xfer of 14MB??? 14.2ms access.... This can't be right!! :|

14MB/s???????

#$)(#@$)(

Anyone have a clue what else to check? I've checked to make sure I'm in DMA mode... drivers are all up to date.... etc...

This hard drive is on Primary channel all by itself too.

Are your drives using PIO mode? (Device manager, check the IDE controller settings)

Hmm, yes. Reading helps. Your multiple question marks confused me :)

It's a weird problem... If I let HD Tach run all the way through, it reads at 14MB straight across the chart... it's like the Hard drive is being limited by something... I'm going to try to switch channels. Worth a try.

System specs? uhmm, fast enough! ;)

Mobo is a cheezy Shuttle AK12A, 1800+ CPU, 512ram... etc.. etc.. None of this "should" affect this.

I just did a fresh install of XP on mine and my wifes pooters... Her's is running fine. Her 46GB Deathstar runs fine. 39MB~18MB xfer rate.

Let me shut down and swap channels quick and see if that does anything... it's a moon shot, but I have nothing better to do at this point.

I refuse to run this system with such an awesome hard drive at that lame xfer rate speed.. LOL

Using atto disk bench with total length of 32mb instead of the default 4mb. I get max read of 47934 bytes and write of 49465 bytes. This is for the 80 GB SE version on a BG7 primary channel master nothing slaved.

I have an Abit KT7a-RAID board with the WD120gb non-se drive on the highpoint controller. After installing SP1 I got the same issue, regardless of my reinstalling all drivers, making sure all setting were right, the hdd access was dog slow. Got rid of the service pack and all was good.

(PS: My buddy just built a xp2200+ box on a MSI KT400, with 2 80gb se drives, SP1 did the same thing... makes you wonder. I'm PRETTY sure (can't be 100% sure:p) that this isn't user error here as we're both pretty handy with comps)

&$%(#*&%....

Figures... and I didn't do a backup when I installed SP1. I guess I'll have to format and install again. If this is the case, heck with SP1.

One thing for sure. I'm sure going to have it save old files before installing any SP's in the future. hehe, 'specially since I have 120 GB.

BTW, swapping channels and cables out did nothing.

I'm with you stonecold... I work with these POS machines for a living, so I don't think I did something THAT stupid.

I'm just glad this is a fresh install. No sweat to format and install again. ;)

hehe, while you're at it, partition that bad boy up... make a partition just for windows to save you some time next time and issue comes up. just a friendly remark :)

How would that save me time? I don't get your comment. I just did a fresh install on a new hard drive. There was nothing on it to begin with. Surely you don't think I would put windows on a 120GM partition anyway? ;)

========
Anyway... it turns out, the on-board controller is crapped or something. Any IDE HD I hook up to it runs slow. Even with the BIOS reset to default and install XP with no service packs or anything....

Access is fine, it's just the transfers are limited to 16Mbps. I always had ran SCSI in it before... My main SCSI drive died, so I put all my remaining SCSI drives in my server. Everything thing says it's running UDMA mode.. but I know better.

I swapped mobo's out with my wifes pooter... she said as long as she couldn't tell the difference she didn't care. [evil grin]:D[/evil grin]

So I'm all good to go for now. Hard drive works great in this one. I'm getting 49+Mbps transfers now.
I just know which board is going in the trash next mobo upgrade. lol
