I'd be interested in hearing what you guys get for cpu utilization in HDtach for the Read-only test on a partitioned drive.

I remember having them on a VIA 333 running in the high 8's...I have an older 1200JB in my NForce and when I reboot I'll go with it and LYK.

well see here is the thing...

I just installed a new drive in my XP box, previously it was all scsi. I removed all the scsi gear, made sure to install the 4in1 drivers, made sure dma is set...running mode 5 as seen in device mananger.

its an XP2400
512mb pc3200
wd1200jb
winxp

the read (max, ave. min) look right, but I am getting like 50% cpu utilization using hdtach 2.61.

Are there any bios tweaks i should be trying?

You must be on an NForce MoBo...there's a patch for XP SP1 and HDTach that John posted (edit=seach for "SP1") a while back to fix it. I was hitting in the high 60's back then and now with the patch I just ran it and it's 11.9% with 4 partitions.

Do you have SP1 installed?

If so then this is the cause.

HDTach in some cases seems affected by the changes SP1 makes to the XP memory management system. Installing a fix from Microsoft willl correct it.

You can read more about it here: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;815411

You can download the fix from here: http://www.iebeta.net/files/Q815411_WXP_SP2_x86_ENU.exe

Install the patch and reboot. HDTach should report the correct CPU Usage again.

Remember though the CPU Usage HDTach is giving you right now is not correct. You can verify this yourself. Copy some files from drive to drive while watching Task Manager.

aside from the fact that i feel like a moron for not using the task manger :( in the first place....

here is a screeny of copying a 1.2gb file from 2nd to 1st partition...looks like all is well. i am going to look to see if that patch fixes hdtach though. thnx for the feedback

Shouldn't, anyways please report back after the fix cause I'm curious to know if my 11.9% is high with this NFarce compared to the VIola ;)
