just saw this while i was browsing drives on newegg a few minutes ago. im just curious if anyone knows how this drive performs compared to the 300GB raptor? is it just using half the platters of the 300GB drive? at $200 vs the $270 for the 300GB version it is hardly the best bang for the buck, but im curious none the less.

Welcome to last month. 😉

It should be one platter, while the 300GB is two platters. Performance will probably be similar, unless WD gimped it like they did with the single platter 320GB SATA drive versus two platter 640GB version. I doubt it though.

Yeah, $/GB isn't that great, but it is priced similar to the older 150GB Raptor, so nothing unusual. Until some other company comes out with 10,000RPM desktop SATA drives (which is unlikely as the other companies have their SCSI/SAS market to protect) I don't think prices will go down.

Its performance is just what one would expect from a single platter VR. I have both and tested them; the 150 is identical minus 150GB of course. 😉

turns out it just had a price hike, it used to be the same $/GB as the 300GB model, but due to the economic turmoil they upped it to try and make more money. read some of the reviews on it there are people complaining about how they were going to get one to use it in RAID with another 150GB drive but for the price it is now they dont think it is worth it
