Step brother's power supply went and took out the hard drive.

Are WD Black's still the creme de la creme?

And if so, is a brand new 1TB Caviar Black worth the $30 premium over a refurb?

Thanks

I don't trust Hd's anymore they keep lowering the warranty So my answer to you is it's a gamble. I have had many WD blacks fail.

IMO definitely. You get 5 years of warranty, vs 1 year on the refurb and even that's a newegg thing that ends soon, normally you only get 90 days.

But whether a Caviar Black is worth it over Seagate ST1000MD003 for $100 after promo... not really. This one's a high density drive, performs very well.

Found it for $100 on Amazon... I'm on it. Thanks, all.

FWIW I have replaced peoples drives against my will with recertified drives supplied by the vendor, only to have to do it again in 3 months...

Hard drives are pretty much the least reliable component in a computer.

They are also the part you want to fail the least, because you will lose data when they fail.

Refurbished drives have very low warranties, and have a reputation for failing. They are untrustworthy.

So, don't buy a refurbished drive. As much as speed is good, buying a disk that is so unreliable that it has already failed once is definitely a bad deal.

Also, the performance difference between different brands for their equivalent models is very small.

I couldnt be happier with WDs RMA procedures.
One of my raptors died a few years ago and when Im replacement card came back I was given a nice upgrade called a velociraptor. Still using it now.

I personally wouldn't buy a refurb, but it's funny that people mention the warranty on new drives. If a new one fails, you get a refurb. And the refurb is going to be a drive that someone found a bad sector and did and rma on. The manufacturer then runs the diagnostics that you could download and run yourself. If it passes then it goes out to replace the next rma.

I would buy new for sure with HDD.
I agree with Fr0sty, WD's RMA process is great. (Just sent in a Caviar blue and got a black of the same capacity)

I love refurbished drives! Hell, I use 3 of them in my RAID-0 array, and I've never had any prob... CRASH.
