WD Raptors making a grinding noise.

I've just been using them in raid 0 for a couple days now, and today I just noticed that they seem to make a strange noise when under heavy load. Its not really loud, but its kind of annoying. I've never owned a 10k rpm drive before, so I was wondering if this is normal. They seem to work very well, but its strange that I just start hearing it today. They've been totally silent when installing windows and stuff.

Maybe the clutches are slipping 😀 ...j/k! 😉

So this is different than a normal seek noise, then? Sort of a grrRRRrrRRRrrrRRR instead of the usual tickety-tick seek noise? My Cheetah X15-36LP makes some really interesting growls that don't sound like normal seek noise, when it's working over a large Zip file to make a self-extractor out of it, for one example.

U might be able to adjust ur seek times with certain tools, and you could see if lowering it helped at all.

Something I noticed I don't know how accurate this is, but drives seek wise tend to be noiser with more data on them becuz they often times have to seek farther and that means it has to move the needle thing farther faster. Vs when u got a small partt filled up it barly needs to move. Once again I don't know if this is accurate just a guess from experience with hard drives, so no one flame on me please 🙂

Its not a constant noise, its like DZZZT...DZZT...DZZZT.....DZT. I dunno a ton about computers, but it doesn't sound right to me.

Maybe I'll try some degfragging...

Sounds ok to me, just the drive spinning i think. As long as it's not a "click...click...click" u shud be fine. My raptors were making a loud whine for a day or two when i 1st installed but then it just went away. Go figure

Heh. These raptors decide on their own when they wanna make noise. Ah well, they are fast as hell though. I always get the first plane in BF1942. And yeah, thats why I got them😉
