WD Raptor Dead or somewhat alive?

So I recently pulled a WD800ADFD 80gb Raptor from a Dell my dad brought home from work that his coworker deemed "dead" because the hard drive wasn't functioning. Everything else was working after we put in a fresh hard drive.

The dealy with the Raptor was that the bios wasn't detecting the hard drive anymore. I can hear it power up and spinning when I power the system on, but that's it. Also tried it on my system and nothing. I've read around about people getting this type of situation fixed because WD hates ICH or something but never was really sure on what the procedure was (because people like to leave out how they solve problems). I have a P5B Deluxe motherboard before someone asks 😛

If someone could give me some ideas on how to get this working before I give up on this drive and sell it for parts/repair, it would be great.

Thanks!

Have you tried running WD's diagnostics? you can download an .iso from there site burn it hook the drive up the the computer boot from cd and run it.

Just tried that after I got off work. Got the results I expected since it's not detected by bios; nada. Was worth a shot to see if anything was up with it though. Any other ideas, folks?

Try a different SATA cable as well. I thought my raptors were toasted after I moved them to a different PC. They were spinning like yours but the BIOS couldnt see them. Swapped the old cables back and it was normal again. The new cables fit fine, I guess it just didnt work. 😕

Was planning to try on a friend's 780i later this week. Hopefully he has some input on the matter. too.

Tried that, too. I tested it with 3 different systems including mine which were all using different cables.

does the drive spin at all? unmount it from the cage and hold it in your hand as the system boots. turn it side to side. if it pulls, then it's spinning, and there may be hope. If it doesn't spin, try the good old freezer trick...but you have to be fast once your get it out of the freezer!

"It's dead, Jim." The fact that they replaced that drive with a new one and the PC worked perfectly was a pretty good clue.

A common cause of your drive's general symptoms is a failed printed circuit board on the drive. This is fixed by replacing the PCB with a working compatible one.
