WD Raptor and Seagate Barracuda

Okay theres the Western Digital Raptor with the powerful 10,000 RPMS, and the Seagate Barracuda 7200.8.
I hear things of the Seagate blows out the Raptor both pricewise and performancewise but somehow I don't believe it. With a Raptor running at 10,000RPMS I think that would run a lot better than any 7200. Also, the random access time between these two harddrives are extremely far apart.

I have both drives. The Raptor is definitely faster, a perfect boot drive. But the 7200.8 isn't that far behind and the price/GB ratio is incredible.

From everything I have read and heard about the raptors they aren't worth the money. I believe AT even did a review that showed they weren't worth the premium cost.

It depends on if you have the cash, and need the space. I had the spare cash for the 2 36G when they came out. I have a small file server at my house that stores all my larger files (mostly data like word documents, databases, etc). I rarely have more than 3 games installed at any given time. The raptors were exactly what I wanted, so I got them. They aren't the fastest anymore (the 76G versions are), but they still load a hell of a lot faster than my old IBM Deskstar 7200 with 8M cache. I still have ~15G free on my second raptor, so for me it was all about performance.

The Seagate doesn't blow the Raptor out of the water in performance, it does however have a much better value for what you get.

i have two 74GB Raptors (no raid), I bought them when they first came out. The Raptors I have are quick don't get me wrong, they are just not worth the extra money when compared to some of the newer drives, and if you are noise freak they are LOUD.

I would look at some of the test's done, I am not a huge Seagate fan, but their drive is almost as fast as the Raptor. I am a big fan of the new Hitachi drives, but everyone has had diferent experiences with diferent drives.

I wouldn't take what these people here have said to heart about the Raptors, they are not like the greatest drive ever, you probably wouldn't even notice the diference between a Raptor and that Seagate. The boot time on a Raptor is a bit quicker like already mentioned, i don't turn my PC off though so it doesn't really matter to me.

It all depends on how much space you need. I run 2 74gig raptors in RAID 0 and i love the speed. I'm not even close to filling these up.

id go for the seagate barracuda. they are nice and quiet, reliable, and you get way more storage for the money. they are pretty fast too.

you think the raptor would be extremely loud in my p180 case? i might get a raptor as primary and a barracuda as secondary for more space.

Raptors are ONLY "loud" depending on how and what case they are installed in. In my Tsunami it was annoyingly loud. In my p180 it is absolutely whisper quiet/inaudible most of the time. I'd go for the raptor. You will not be sorry.

I agree the Raptor isn't too load in the P180, my new rig I moved my Raptors over to a P180 and they are not too loud. I totally disagree with your "go for the Raptor" line, as an owner of many drives and builder of many new machines, the performance gain that the Raptors have over quite a few diferent drives on the market now is VERY minimal......The only time you will notice any diference is possibly in your boot time, even then it's not going to be enough to justify the price that you pay for a 74GB drive, go out and buy one of the new Hitachi drives and make yourself happy.
