I purchased the WD My Passport Ultra 1tb hard drive. It works fine when attached to my HP desktop computer when using it to back up my files using both the Norton 360 backup program and the WD software. It works fine to backup my laptop when the WD My Passport Ultra is attached to the laptop using both programs. When the My Passport Ultra is attached to my desktop, the laptop is able to read the WD My passport using the network connection, however I am not able to back up my files by the network on the laptop when the My Passport is connected to my desktop. Can anyone explain why even though the laptop can see the hard drive when attached to the desktop, I cannot use this connection to backup my laptop. Thanks in advance, WolfpackRon.

Limitations in the backup software. Backing up to a network share is generally considered to be an "enterprise" feature these days.

VirtualLarry,
Does "enterprise" mean an enhanced feature that the seller can charge more money for?

Typically, yes.

However, Norton 360 can, according to the maker, backup to a network drive just fine, but it must be a network drive, not a mere accessible UNC path:

To back up your data to an external network drive, you must map the external network drive to your computer. When you map a drive, you must also specify a drive letter for the connection.

Also, make sure that your desktop OS's Permissions" allow writing to files from another computer. This particulkarly important if you are using Win 7 or 8.

Hello,

Sorry for the trouble. I am Vineeth and I am from the Norton Support team.

Does this Network appear in your Backup destination list? What happens when you back up files to the network drive? If it is not available in the list, then as cerb posted, you may need to map the network drive to your computer first.

Let me know if you need any help!

Thanks!
