WD JB1200 won't plat nice with my Maxtor.

It's been a while since I had a problem that I could not figure out on my own but this one has me whooped. I have a WD 1200JB and a Maxtor D740X 40GB I want to have on the same IDE channel, the WD ans master and the Maxtor as slave. When I do, the WD drive will be in UDMA mode 5, but the Maxtor will only be in ATA-33. The maxtor's burst rate is onlt @ 22MB/sec, so the transfer rate suffers because of that. I tried every jumper settings ie master/slave cable select, and different IDE cables. The problem still occurs. Any ideas ?
