Question: Is this situation normal for a hard drive?
I made a post earlier concerning a high-pitched whining noise from my 200GB WD which I put in a Mapower enclosure. At first I thought that maybe it was just a temporary sound because it went away after I left it alone.
Now though, it seems that it only remains quiet whenever the hard drive isn't in use. Once I use it for anything (start copying files, playing files off of it, etc.), I get the high-pitches noise. It sounds like the noise resulting from the hard drive spinning (disc-based noise). Furthermore, it starts making the noise at a regular interval after it (the external) is plugged in for awhile - it sounds like it is starting up and then stopping, etc.). It was quiet before that.
If this sound is normal, then I'm okay - I'll just have an annoying noise to live with. However, if it isn't, please let me know. The hard drive (and enclosure) are both new, and I can send it in if it does have a problem.
Thanks.
P.S. I made the first post in troubleshooting section. I can't believe I missed the first forum topic.
