I have a 1tb WD Caviar Black that I need to RMA.(its still under warranty)

If i use WD's advanced RMA where they ship the replacement drive first, then i put the old drive in that box and ship it back.

Anyone know exactly How much WD will "charge" on my debit card while waiting to receive my old drive?
Is it the amount of what a new drive cost?
Or less?

Ok, found answer to my own question.
They put a hold on your account for the value of a new drive until the old one is received.

That sucks, i dont have that much in that bank account that my debit card is linked to.

So i guess I'll have to pack and ship first.

Now it also looks like my 750gb WD Caviar black has bad sectors also.
Like my 1tb drive, it doesn't even pass WD Lifeguard quick test with the error...
Quick Test on drive 2 did not complete. Status Code=07 (Failed read test element, Failure Checkpoint =97 (unknown test). SMART self-test did not complete on drive 2.

The 1TB is definitely bad as it fails quick and extended tests and i tried zero'ing the drive and that made no difference.

Now im trying the extended test on my 750gb drive, and it doesnt look good since hd tune reported errors as well as crystaldiskinfo on this drive too.

I hope they send me new ones and not refurbs.

Well, the 750gb fails everything also.
And the WD Lifeguard fails at repairing them and says to contact customer support.

That's two WD Black drives in two separate pcs.

No telling when exactly either started failing since i use them both only as storage drives.

At least they both have about another 1yr left on their warranties.

Question. I had a WD 340 MB I think it was go out on me. Do I need to provide a receipt to get a new drive? I bought it a couple years ago on Amazon. I think it had a five year warranty.

I see a lot of people having bad luck with WD. I think I'll go for the enterprise drives instead. My primary drive is an Adata SSD though.

No receipt needed.
Just go HERE and click on the Warranty Check button and it will ask you to enter the drives SN and it will tell you how much warranty is left on the drive.

Figured i'd do an update so if anyone sees this later doing a search they don't see all WD Black drives as junk.
I've had many WD drives and this is my first failure/RMA.

1: the 750gb drive seems ok after i zero filled the drive, but i'll keep a close eye on it while its still under warranty.

2: Only cost me $6.78 to ship my 1TB WD Black drive from here on the East coast to WD on the West coast.
I bought the shipping label from WD which comes all filled out with my RMA and shipping info and dropped the package off at a UPS store.

I still would have rather done the advanced RMA and not had to have shipped first, but $6.78 was just fine with me.
