My trust old 10.1 5400 WD HD just died 3 days ago. It was the click, click, click of death. Anyway I RMA'd it and how long before i expect to see another HD. I've heard they sometimes give you a better HD than the one you sent them? Is that true? Hmmm, hope i get a 40 GB for free? Thx, peace out.

Actually when I RMA'ed mine a couple of years ago, they send me a replacement right away and gave me 30 days to return the defective one. They just took my credit card # to charge me if I didnt return the drive within 30 days.

I had a 5G drive die on me last year, one month before the warranty expired. The RMA took about 2 weeks, and I got back a BRAND NEW 5G drive :( I was hoping that there wouldn't be any 5G's left, and they would have to upgrade the drive, but they didn't. So don't expect a larger drive.

I have RMA'D a 5.1 gig and received in 2 days a 6.4 gig. They used my credit card and I also had 30 days to send back the bad one. You use their box and postage back with the RMA'D.

WD is usually excellent for RMA's so I'd think you get a new drive back pretty quickly. They sometimes give out larger HDD's if they don't have any of your specific drive available to sendyou, so you might get lucky :)
Plus unlike most all manufacturers they usually send out NEW drives back.

I recently sent back a 3.1GB drive and about 2 months later I got back a brand new 3.1GB. WD has never sent me a bigger drive.

I RMA'd an OEM 6.4 GB that was DOA out of the packaging and got a new drive in about 10 days.

BTW, they sent me back another 6.4 GB drive.

i think give them the credit card# is better method
quicker, get a brand new one, instead used one.

Always go for the advanced replacement - it'll require a credit card number as collateral, but you get a drive a lot quicker!

how old was your drive? there arent too many people rcommending WD although Ive had a couple for about a year with no problems and I was thinking about getting another 20gb 7200rpm drive to match up if I ever tried a raid set-up
