WD HD 160GB So much noise...is it defective?

I just got in on a WD 160 GB HD that was at a great price from OM a few weeks ago. However, it makes so much noise writing to the drive, but I can't understand why.

First off I have a WD 120 GB HD that is my primary drive. It is completely silent.

Now this 160 GB is my secondary drive, and when I surf the net it keeps on making noises like it's writing to the drive (not just when I access the drive).

What is wrong with it? Should I attempt to return/replace it?

Thanks

You can enable S.M.A.R.T. in bios which will check the hd for problems or use the diagnostics cd the drive came with. If it is still under warrenty your best bet is to return it for a replacement.

Your drive is fine. If you have doubts run the Western Digital DataLifeGuard Tools. Linky.

Maybe for some people, don't know. My secondary PC now has 4 hard drives in it, all are WD 7200rpm drives. If I put them through AIDA32's random access test, I can only hear the drives if I put my ear right up to the front of the case - and that's with the RAID 0 array going, so two drives are seeking at once.
And speaking of AIDA32, it's got a SMART diagnostics utility, under the program's Storage section.
