WD Hard drive making noises

My Western Digital Caviar SE16 has been making a noise every once and awhile, and at shut down. It sounds like a hard drive going into sleep mode I think. I backed everything up and tested it with WD's diagnostic tools and during the shorter test and the beginning of the full test the hard drive had a very loud whirring noise, but the test came up with no problems. I already ordered a new HD because of the noise, but I'm wondering if it is actually necessary to replace it. I figured that the noise means it will eventually corrupt/fail even if it already hasn't, but am I wrong?

BTW, this hard drive is around 4 years old.

Any unusual sounds are always bad and often mean that something wrong with the drive.
The only thing you should check is that the screws holding the drive to the case are still tight. If these are loose, the drive may cause the metallic case to resonate and produce a loud noise.

Secure the drive as said above. I'd had a similar problem and after securing it properly I heard no such noise then. Also badly fragmented drive may cause that too.
