Single platters seem to have been shipped in 2008. By now, would any of these models I buy at newegg be single platter?

Any of the drives with a late 2008 and 2009+ date on the sticker should be a single platter.

The Blacks have actually been slower to pick up the single platter design.

HDD manufacturers usually work alittle backwards with their Density rollouts.

They start with their low speed drives like green/lp because the 5400RPM is less demanding and it is easy to tune.

Then move up to the middle range, then finally the high end.

It'd make sense that higher-density platters might first be used on slower-spinning disks, which present wider signal waves to the electronics. Apparently Seagate first used perpendicular recording on a laptop drive.
