WD Caviar Black 1.0TB SATA 6G - Performance disappointment?

Anyone happen to catch the review on PC Perspective on the new Sata 6G Caviar Black 1TB? Here's a snippet:

testbed.jpg

"Caviar Black 1TB: Great drive. I was expecting a little more, but not because of the SATA 6Gb/sec interface. With dual actuators at play, a massive 64MB cache, 500GB platters, and the same dual core CPU of the 2TB models, this drive should have at least matched those other drives in performance. It appears Western Digital was not as aggressive with the track geometry in these drives..."

I had been looking forward to this drive but like the reviewer I expected more. It scored low in some benchmarks, which maybe due to the Marvell controller, but still a bit of a downer.

Check out the full review here.

The numbers look pretty good to me, but I can't tell from their review what controller they used for the other drives tested. It is hard to get a good apples to apples look at it that way.

That being said, it does seem to be a nice step up speedwise from the 640GB black drives. You could probably run 3 of these in RAID-0 for the price of a 2TB black, and get a huge performance boost.
