I just replaced a pair of WD 500GB, just replaced them with a single 1TB WD Black. I have to say this thing is just incredibly fast. burst mode can go to about 240MB/sec. I did a physical transfer of 250GB HD family videos into it and it was copying at about 70GB/sec. That's at least 20% over my venerable seagate 32mb/640 2 platter drive I have on another rig.

extremely impressed.

Edit: yes I meant 70MB/sec. Although 70GB/sec is probably in the near future. :]

Black drives are great. I have one as my main drive (640gb model) and I'm very, very happy with it.

I think the new Blacks are the best-performing HDDs on the market now. Could be mistaken, though...

Aside from the velociraptor, yes. They are. Consumer SATA HDs, mind you. There are faster SAS drives etc.

Oh, the black drives still won't have the same access times as the 10,000 rpm raptors. But depending on usage, this might not be so important.

I much prefer the Greenpower drives from WD. Very quiet and pack most of the performance of a 7,200rpm drive.

Still... they are the noisiest things in my PC.

my WD 1TB black just showed up on my desk about 30min ago :)

I currently use a 1st gen 74gb raptor (yr 2003) as my boot drive and a 58gb part for games. I was planning on getting rid of the raptor and doing my OS and games on my new Black drive but I'm feeling lazy.

For now, I'm planning on leaving my Vista install on the Raptor and use the 1TB for all my games and storage.

I'm in the same boat with the 74gb raptor as main drive. I have an interal 160gb(backup,apps) and 80gb (media) for storage. Also 3 external drives for music, movies, etc. I've been actually wanting to crunch down to 1TB drive and sell the rest of the drives and use a couple for backups.

glad to know someone is happy with the performance of a drive.

Just grab a trial of acronis and do a clone job.
