Trying to get an idea of what to get, have my eye on a bunch of computers in my area for cheap which include 2 HP servers, which use 2.5" drives.

I'll be outfitting them on the cheap, but I'm having a hard time figuring out which drives to get, please do not recommend me hard drives that are going to be expensive, I've already got an idea how I will manage my data. This thread is more about the performance and reliability of these to drives, both seem to have good reputation, so it comes down to performance. My gut tells me the WD Black will be faster, but the WD Blue has more cache memory.

WD Black 1TB (WD10JPLX) or WD Blue 1TB (WD10JPVX)

WD Black 1TB (WD10JPLX) 7200 RPM 32 MB Cache

Either one really. The WD black will run faster and hotter though. Especially with those old 1TB drives. Scorching hot. lol.

You should run a long SMART test on each drive before you put them into service.

Old? Why would they be scorching hot?

Please remember these would be 2.5" drives, not really comparable to 3.5" HDDs that can have much higher storage capacity.

Yeah my bad I thought we were talking about the old 3.5" 1 TB blacks. Those older 3.5" blacks ran really hot, that's all i was warning you about.
I would probably go ahead and use the 2.5" 1TB blacks. They should be fine as they are much newer drives.

That's what I was thinking, would the larger cache on the WD Blue have an effect on performance?
