I was going to grab the 500GB Seagate Drive on sale for $99, but it was usb 2.0 only, and i really wanted to use firewire, and in the future eSATA interfaces.

750GB
USB 2.0,/FIREWIRE/eSATA interfaces

$199 at Newegg

As usual clearance at BB is YMMV, as its usually up to the Managers as to what gear goes on clearance.

just a quick update...

got it running in Linux(ubuntu)

df -k

/dev/sda1 732549604 175373072 557176532 24% /Storage

Reformated it to reiserfs, working like a champ for storage. Loading it as a regualr disk on boot

from my /etc/fstab
/dev/disk/by-id/ieee1394-0090a973b6d1ac66:0:0-part1 /Storage reiserfs defaults 0 2

There's a 120GB Maxtor on sale @ Fry's BM for $59.99 and an Iomega 160GB for $79.99 that should be USB powered and a WD Passport 250GB for $99.99. I bought my 160GB WD Passport (USB powered) @ Costco for $80 and love it.

As for the OP, 750GB drives are selling for $110 (Seagate @ Fry's) and a decent case often is around $30, so that price is definitely not hot unless you just feel better about paying the extra for an all in one branded item.

As for future use - you'll almost never use "old" tech with a "new" connection in the future, or at least I don't. I wind up buying new stuff that take up the new connectors.

Not sure what the start of your reply had to do with the thread, as this was about a 750GB drive, my workstation has 480GB (200,160,120) of internal storage already.

As for the rest, I wasn?t looking for a usb 2.0 external device, speed was a primary factor for not buying the 500GB my book that was usb 2.0. usb 2.0 would have relegated this to backups only. Firewire 800(currently using 400) and eSATA allow me to use this as workspace (video and photo) and not just storage.

Also? Show me an external enclosure that has usb 2.0 firewire 800, and eSATA connections for $30.

I?m also not entirely sure what you mean by old tech and future use? The interfaces or the hard drive itself?. The drive has usb 2.0, firewire 800, and an eSATA port on the back. In fact I?m going to be moving from firewire to eSATA because the My book likes to resync when another firewire device is hotplugged from/to the chain. My firewire card reader remains, but the my book, drops and reconnects. I could write some udev rules to compensate for the mount of the drive when detected, but that wont stop it from dropping, and therefore would leave me up the creek if I was editing/encoding something in the background and had it resync.
