WD 3TB External

I've been waiting since the floods for the price on a WD 3TB external drive to get down to the pre-flood prices. Today I can get one for $149 delivered with a 2 year warranty which is getting real close to where it was priced before the floods. Problem is I'm kind of afraid to pull the trigger on it for a couple of reasons. One, I don't know how much further the drive will drop in price and, two, I'm not real pleased with the quality of the post-flood drives. I'm thinking if I buy it I might even toss on another year warranty because I don't plan on filling it in that time frame and I don't trust those drives yet but I like the price, well, sort of.

Oh, I should add this will be used as our media server.

If your not comfortable with it, get the extra warranty or try choosing another drive. Also, I think it goes without saying you should keep it backed up.

prices will always go down, just how fast is the issue.

While I can agree with the post flood quality issue, it is also part of the reason some drives are being sold at a low special price as too many people are not interested in buying suspect drives. If that is the case, once the masses feel like buying again, no more good specials.

As with all computer hardware, buy if you need it. That is about the best advice that can be given.

If this was a a year and half ago I'd already be using it. I had it down to 129 and I was just getting ready to pull the switch and the floods hit and that was that. I've had to RMA a few drives with WD and they've never given a problem with replacing their drives. Hopefully that won't be needed.

And good advice to always keep things backed up. What do you all think about the WD program that keeps your files constantly updated? That seems to me to cause a lot of wear and tear on the drive which I suppose is good for them ... does anyone have any experience with that program?

Stop worrying about a few bucks and just buy the drive. There are more important things in life than an hour's pay. Find something else to obsess over.

LOL, geez, sport, I kind of thought the idea of the forum was to ask advice and maybe throw it around a little. I suppose multi-page threads must REALLY piss you off.

About storage, yes. All you gain by obsessing and waiting and waiting is a few dollars. It's not worth it.

Sign up for a Costco membership which will save you a lot on groceries, and while you're there buy a 3TB Seagate with a 2 year warranty for $130.

Excuse me but my second post clearly asked a question about a STORAGE program I have no first hand experience with. Me thinks there is more that bothers you than someone asking a couple of questions in a Storage forum about STORAGE. If that's true put me on ignore.

Now, does anyone have any experience with the auto-updating program included in the software that comes with this drive? Like I said I think that might put unneeded stress on the drive so is that true?

I had the 2TB MyBook Live, so perhaps a slightly older generation of both drive and software. The hardware itself: the 2TB version at least used the less-than-stellar EARS drive, and mine did indeed fail after about 6 months. I only used the backup software that was included for a month or two before ditching it in favor of just manually mounting it as a network drive. You can't really access the files directly; it's just a big generic partition. BUT, to be honest I didn't really play with it too much. Perhaps it has matured a bit. Not the best answer for you, but perhaps a start. For the price, I'd say go for it.

Thanks for the input LM and I have ordered the drive. I don't think it will get too much more lower in price and I paid for two extra years replacement figuring that if it lasts all 4 years then it's still money well-spent.
