WD 36GB Raptor 10,000rpm - $69 AR

Old, slow, loud and hot compared to the newest 7,200 RPM drives. The raptor 36 is not as good as the 74, check StorageReview.com.

The low density of the platter hurts performance compared to a modern 160GB+ drive for the same price.

I want a raptor, and I will be getting one this month. Should I jump now or take my chances that there will be a better BF deal?

That was true of the older 36 gig raptors...but I don't believe that's the case anymore.

Indeed, that review at storagereview was done along time ago.

But I've never seen a link / review / anything else from anyone to indicate that the 36 has ever been updated to match the 74, just people assuming that it happened.

umm at 10000rmp i dont think they are slower than 7200
platter density has a big effect on performance, and platters for 7200 rpm drives are now as high as 160 GB (4x the density) though 80 - 133 are more common.

I'm happy to admit I'm wrong if anyone can post a link that shows the 36 is better now.

No your right some folks just think spindle speed is everything. try telling that to a 15,000 rpm 4.3 scsi drive fast in its day but its days are gone unless you raid 4 of em which i did.
