At your local Sam's club. Check click and pull, and search for Western Digital. Yes, it's not $80 GB, but OK deal for someone in a need of a drive.

I already bought this one from my sam's. If you can still find it (this deal is actually a few weeks old), this is one of the fastest drives out. The only things that get better reviews on storagereview are IBM's and the newer 30+GB/platter 7200 RPM drives. It's a real nice drive. Quiet, but makes some weird startup and stop noises. Great performance. Tested over 20000 under win98 with sandra. Thsi drive OEMS for about 100 + shipping on the web, so you get a retail drive for about 33% less than the OEM one total.

EDIT: So no one complains that I didn't mention Maxtor somewhere in here (I think every hard drive deal thread must have the stipulation that you mention every other type of hard drive out), this is from storagereview about the DM+60 versus WD 20GB/platter BB series

Overall, the Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 60 provides formidable competition to the Western Digital Caviar WD400BB when it comes
to WinBench performance. Unfortunately, the DM+60's regression in IOMeter scores means it has no chance in keeping up with the
WD. To Maxtor's credit, the DM+60 is available in capacities of up to 60 gigs, something matched only by the Quantum Fireball Plus
AS (along with the older-generation IBM Deskstar 75GXP). It is, as a result, a drive to consider if you're looking for more than 40
gigs. If not, however, Western Digital's offering is probably a better solution.

Sorry, I just noticed it today and did not see it posted at the price. I've heard it's pretty loud, but fast indeed. The price is good for the retail drive, but many people don't care if it's retail or OEM.

One tip for this deal.. Don't believe click and pull if it says it's not in stock .. you usually can't trust the salespeople either unless you know the SKU. I would actually go to your store and look. If you are planning on calling ahead and getting price and stock avail, then plan on getting to the store that day. It's likely a sam's employee will try and grab the drive. The ones at mine tried a little trickery. These were finally marked down in mine even though they were off clickandpull for my store. Since my store is one of the slowest, the price will likely be in all the computers by now, even if you don't see the drive in stock on clickandpull. While you're there, you can check if the 60GB drive from before is on special there too, although that one is likely already gone. the 60GB is one of the top 5400 rpm drives out and beats some slower 7200 rpm ones, except for latency.

Thanks for the post. I usually look for drives that workout to ~ $2.00/per GB or less, this one is $2.26/per GB. Recently Staples had a Maxtor 20 GB ATA100 for $38 after coupons ( $1.90/per GB ).

Is Sam's Club like a regional thing? and it's like costco?

Not sure (though I think they are nationwide) and yes, it's a membership warehouse (though if you're not a member, I believe you can get a one day guest pass and pay 5% more).

Glad it worked for some people.
Sam's is a national warehouse club owned by Wal-Mart. It is like Costco, or BJ's in the sence that you pay a membership fee. They often carry
'excusive' products, like Sam's has a Toshiba cordless phone which is not even listed on Toshiba's web site, but has functionality identical to a different model they have listed.

The deal seems to be regional, since a bunch of people reported in their areas it's still showing at $119 price.
Yeah, it is over $2/GB (makes me recall a WD 340MB drive I bought in 94 for $320 :D), but people say it's a faster drive than Maxtor. Unfortunately Staples does not PM Sam's.
