AFAIK 2500JD can still be found with ball bearings so YMMV with this one. I wouldn't want a ball bearing drive for free.

2500JD has been out for a year, if not more? So it's possible you'll hit the old ball-bearing stock. That's why I jumped on 3200JD here, 320Gb ones should all be fluid bearing.

When you get it, how can you tell if its bearings or FDB? Manufacture date?

The 320GB SATA WD drive? Monarch computer has them for $140 shipped, no rebates or anything. Ordered one this morning when I saw the thread here.

I wouldn't be surprised if they sell out - that's a killer price. Newegg had them for $140 too, but it was after a $30 rebate (that expired Wednesday)

It is a good deal if you need the drive right away and you have FRYs nearby. However if you have FRYs in your state you gotta pay tax on 160 which would bump the price to $120 and if you don't you gotta pay $8 for shipping. You also gotta fill and mail the rebate, wait for it and call in if it doesn't come in time. Also don't forget that the drive at FRYs is retail so it has only one year warranty whereas OEM 3200JD from monarch has 3. For me extra $20 were very well worth increased capacity, 3 year warranty, guaranteed fluid bearing, and no rebate hassle.

I don't know how to discern ball bearing from fluid bearing drives, but I think it would be safer to buy black 05 drive.
