If you buy OEM you get 3 years warranty standard.
If you buy retail you only get 1 year warranty.
The price difference between OEM and retail is $5.
So for $5 you get extra 2 years of warranty.

For some odd reason the one I got from Newegg last month is starting to crap out on me. I've attemped multiple times of reformatting and now have it hooked up to a Silicon Image SATA150 Controller doing low-level formats.
I've been getting "write delay failed" errors when I try to format the volume, and the system becomes incredibly slow and unstable. It all began when I tried to copy files onto the hardware...anybody knows how to resolve this?

Try a different and or type/brand of SATA cable. Could also be a loose power or SATA cable connection.

I am using a brand-new SecureConnect cable that I got with my 74GB raptor...also tried the regular one and it's still doing that.
I am using killdisk to zero fill the hard drive now. Also made sure that the management setting is set to Programs instead of System Cache. The next thing after zero filling the drive is to format it with FAT32...might be NTFS that is flaky.
I hope it's all a software issue. I have trouble believing that my spankin' new HDD is already dying on me and need to be sent back for a refurbed model.

Don't use FAT32 or you'll regret it. NTFS is far superior! ...not to mention FAT32 can't handle large files like DVD's.
