Sam's Club has the Western Digital WD205BARTL for $99.98 and offer a $40 rebate from Sam's Club. The box also has a $30 rebate in it, but the Sam's form says you can't use both... okay ... It is an ATA66 drive, 7200RPM. Got this from Felby at Rivazone, it has been verified. If you have a Sams Club this would be a good one.

We've been talking about this very deal here:

http://forums.anandtech.com/messageview.cfm?catid=40&threadid=230617.

This is indeed a VERY hot deal. You can't use both rebates, however... both require a UPC, and you're only going to have one. Still, 20 gig 7200 rpm drive for $60?!?!?! Can't beat it.

(Note that some people on the other thread are claiming to have price matched staples on this one... I'm skeptical, to say the least.)

Monty, You can be skeptical all you want but we have the price match. If you have dealt with Staples for any amount of time you should know that anything can and does happen....you just have to work it. We got free zip drives with free digital cameras during that Iomega promotion but I guess you will tell me we didn't do that deal, either. We did it, but it was a hell raising experience with many phone calls.

If you can't persuade Staples to do the deal for you, don't try to discourage others into trying it.

Hey chill out. I've pricematched several things at Staples. My only point was that you can't count on it.

If you check out FatWallet, you find stories from several people who tried to PM on this very deal and couldn't do it. If you did it, great, but don't assume it's a sure thing. It's not.

(Who is the "we" you keep referring to?)

WE means that I can't take credit for negotiating the deal so I am not using the word "I". I tried to do it Sunday afternoon and got shot down. I give it one go and if I can't do it I leave it to someone that knows how to negotiate and enjoys the "art". I would rather just hand over a coupon and forget it.

And a deal with Staples is never a sure thing. We have the price match but it is a 50-50 chance we have to go back in and have them straighten out the coupons once it has been delivered. That is why I like dealing with the stores so I can walk out and know what I am charged with no more hassle.

Staples does not carry the Western Digital 20.5 gig retail, just oem...so price match is wasting your time. Just go buy it at Sam's for no hassles.
Bandito, you look like you got a good deal on a 5400rpm drive, but I still prefer the 20.5 7200rpm drive I got from Sam's.

So is this only for local stores? And you have to be a sams member. Then I see why I would go with staples PM.

Staples does carry the 20.5 in a retail box. At least that is what we were told last night although we all know the CSR could be misinformed. IM 1009779. They carry different kinds of these drives. Some in the box and some out of the box and different rmp's. I have not seen the actual drive box so I am not clear if this is the EXACT thing Sam's is carrying. I would prefer this model, too. However our Local Sam's didn't have it in stock and we didn't want to have to cross that hurdle.

What you do after you get the box in your hands is up to you.

The sad thing for me is I bought a Sam's Choice Card and never used it...Not even once...:p Monty is right about the Staples Price Match...I got shot down by 2 different CS Reps...Staples has always been suck. Not to mention they generally cancel orders after sales. (Remember Onsale/Egghead) Has anyone tried pricematching at Buy.com?

It is really frustrating when one person can get a deal and another cannot get a deal. I don't know what the issue is about Sam's Club, but I was told they would price match and I got a price match. They may have changed their mind since Tuesday. The Kentucky call center is the one where I got my match.

Sam's used to let you buy as a non-member if you paid a higher price. I think it was 5 percent. I do not know if they still do it. However, if they do it is one alternative argument.

I always get my deals at Staples with persistance. On the other hand, CIRCUIT CITY is a nightmare :)

Sam's does have an online site but it doesn't list this hard drive - at least last time I looked. You might check Wal-Mart just as point of interest..both online and off to see what they have. Staples will then call your local Sam's to see what the price is and ask if they have it in stock. At the store they will often not even call.

The drive's not available directly from their web site, but you can check availability for your local club online. If you're ordering more than $250 of stuff, you can even have them pull it off the shelves and hold it for you. It's an awesome service if you buy a lot of stuff at Sams.

Sam's site has a couple problems - one, it tends to have problems pushing up pages. Fortunately, the refresh button will usually bring them up on the second try. Two, their links are really poorly marked, and difficult to find.

Go to www.samsclub.com. Click on "Click 'n Pull" to bring up the Click 'n Pull page, then scroll down to where it says Guest Preview, and click. Click on your state, and choose the store you want to check. Once you've chosen your store, enter the SKU, 294614 in the search box. It'll show pricing as $139.98, but it'll ring up at the correct price.

I'm surprised Sam's Club is still in business. The one near my house never has any customers. I agree with Staples. They cancel orders even after the sale transactions go through. I've had orders cancelled and I've had them re-adjust the price on certain items because although the website accepted the coupon, they did not honor it and gave me few dollars and change for the coupon.

Sams club stays in business because of people like me, who went in for a $59 hard drive and left with a $59 hard drive, a 12-pack of Mac-N-Cheese, and about $50 worth of other crap I didn't need.

My friend picked up a WD 45G 5400 rpm ata66 drive at Sam's this evening for $149 + tax, with the $40 mail in rebate that brings the total to about $123....not bad for a big drive.

BEWARE the mail in rebate expires on Sept. 30th!!!
