WD 150GB Raptor

Is the WD 150GB Raptor still a good option for gaming and general responsiveness? 150GB will be plenty for me, I'm more concerned with performance. Are there any faster drives I should look at (excluding SSD)?

The 640Gig WD and the 1Tb Samsung F1 are about equal to the 150gig Raptor, and are cooler, cheaper, quieter, and have more space. Newegg has the 640Gig WD on sale for $99 right now

Or if you can wait, the new 300Gig VelociRaptor will be out soon (~1month??) and will be the fasted SATA drive out. But it will be ~$300.

Yeah, the new Velociraptor looks promising, even though it is expensive. I'm waiting for one myself, supposed to be out any day now for OEM purchase.

I've been a Raptor owner every generation, but currently, the 150GB model is not top dog.

You can view some benchmarks here at Anandtech. Same system is used, here's the one where they test a 150GB Raptor, here's the one where some newer, faster drives (overall) are tested.

That said, the upcoming Velociraptor blows them away. (That's what I'm aiming for.)

If you need to buy right now, I wouldn't get the 150GB Raptor.

For the price of 150 Raptors now a days, I believe they are worth it. Use 2 of them myself, and OS/Game load times are fast enough. Waiting on SSDs to drop below $500.00 for 128GB units myself. 😉

Doesn't that show what I said?

The 640Gig WD and 1Tb Samsung are equal to the Raptor, but the VR beats them when it comes out?

Oh I am sorry. I thought giving a link to show exactly how they compared would be nice.

I guess we should all be jerks on this site. Like you.

Well, you quoted me when you posted the link, which makes it look like you were trying to tell me (and not the OP) something. I just thought it was odd since it was like you wre pointing it out to me.

And I am not a jerk, thanks.
