WD 100GB 8MB Buffer $209 @ MWave.com

WD 120GB 1200BB EIDE ULTRA-ATA/66-100 8.9MS 7200RPM 2MB BUFFER (Bare drive) Detail Specs $208.00

This also sounds pretty good, not the fastest, but a lot of storage space.

Hmm, let's see:

a) 100 BG, 2 MB buffer = $195
b) 100 GB, 8 MB buffer = $209
c) 120 GB, 2 MB buffer = $208
d) 120 GB, 8 MB buffer = $242

anyone else prefer option B?

hmm.......i wonder what kind of real life perforamnce difference the bigger buffer would make? i would think most of hte time you wouldn't be loading and unloading large enough amounts of data to tell teh difference? but hell 100gb is already a lot...heheh. maybe someone can englighten us? which is worth it? the extra buffer or the extra memory? keep in mind that 2mb is basically the standard and runs just fine......so it is really about how good the 8mb buffer would be? oh well, bump

I actually have the 100gig 8mb Cahce version running as my primary had. IT IS EXTREMEMLY FAST. You will notice the difference. But if the harddrive is mainly for storage reasons then get the 120 2mb version unless you have to have the speed.

'maximum pc' magazine has a good article comparing the WD 8mb cache models to the scsi seaate x15-36lp. As far as desktop performance goes the wd did very well and certainly was the better bang for the buck.

I picked option
e) 100GB, 2MB buffer = $120 (Sam's club special, $220 with $100 rebate last November).
Should have bought another and done RAID. Thought the prices would drop faster, instead of RISING.
/edit for typo

I deal with Mwave exclusively for most everything i buy.
They have decent shipping, no hassles and my stuff is ALWAYS on time. My total orders from the for last year were like $15000 between building PC's for people locally etc etc.

They are a definite buy from company, if this drive is that cheap I might have to go buy two of them and dump my IBM's..can you say two of these 100gig-8meg cache drives in a raid 0 config....drooooolllll!

Talk about fast and copius amounts of space! =)

I am still kicking myself for passing that up!!:disgust:

I ran this drive (two in my system) for 2 months on my home system and then switched to a Seagate Barracuda IV, I could not tell a lick's differecne between the two in everyday performance. If I were xferring large files between the drvie the WD really shined. Otherwise the difference was negligible in "feel".

ugh me too. I had to buy a drive the other day for 120 (80gb)... hopefully. i should have gotten another then too.

Gateway has the SE 100GB WD for $239 with free shipping (over $199). Bensbargains mentions an additional $50 discount.

$239 - $50 = $189.

You know, maybe it's just my bad luck but I have never had any luck at all with WD hard drives. I have literally had 4 of them replaced in the last 3 years. The most recent one was only 12 months old (I had purchased it for use in a small server at the office).

OTOH I have never had a single quantum or maxtor drive fail on me. Some of the ones I have are 4 years old and still going strong.

I don't care how fast the drive is if it has poor reliability.

The Maxtor 740DX 80 GB with fluid bearings is going for only $134 at newegg... guess that's the hot ticket for me.

gunfighter After reading your post I counted about 10 maxtor drives I had without any problems. Never owned a WD and was tempted with the 8mb. buffer but recall people having problems. The drive you mention sounds very interesting. Heading there to check it out.

i believe newegg was actually the second one to have that site design. mwave has been around a while longer than newegg....
