Copied over from a post I made on the hot deal thread over these hard drives, but this seems like a more appropriate place.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
You know, after looking around a bit, something is beginning to scare me about these drives. Western Digital usually offers 3 year warrantees, but these drives only come with a 1 year. I'm wondering if the 3 year warranty stated on storagereview.com was a typo or a change in policy. Meanwhile, two separate companies announce $100 rebates on this brand new drive. It just seems a bit fishy to me, especially since the last blazing hot hard drive deal (i.e. price/gig way below normal ratios) was the $120 45gb 75GXP in January, and we all know exactly why those were so cheap now . . .
So, am I being paranoid, or might there be something to be worried about here?
Where did you see/hear about a 1-year warranty?
The WD1000BBRTL has a three year warranty. I don't know where this rumor started. I've purchased retail versions of these disks and "3 Year Warranty" is printed right on the capacity label.
Cheers!
Hrmm . . .where the rumour started. There were some posts on storagereview.com about it, and the link to the bestbuy.com deal on this drive clearly stated a 1 year warranty. I don't know exactly what up with CompUSA's $100 off deal, since there is no warranty info on their site.
Well, the drive has a three year warranty if it's a retail boxed drive. OEM drives should also have a three year warranty as well. If you have one of these drives, just plug in the serial number to the warranty validator on WD's site. This will inform you of the warranty period left.
Cheers!
