<< okay - I must be an idiot - downloaded fdisk fix - put the fix on my startup disk - executed it - and rebooted as instructed
This was done on another machine as it stated would not do it in dos on my k7s5a and of course windows is not installed as I am putting in this new hardrive
Anyway with the "fix" fdisk still verifies drive integrity and still offers me only 29858 to work with - now I don't mind losing a gig or two - but gee - this is a pretty stiff loss >>
Look at your diskette's fdisk.exe, does it have the same or greater date/time stamp as below?
The English version of this fix should have the following file attributes or later:

If not, you haven't transfered the fdisk.exe to the diskette properly.. Go back to that previous PC and look in the \windows\command\ directory and see if that fdisk.exe has the same or greater date/time stamp.. If it does, copy it to the diskette and try again.. I assume you have to delete and re-create the partition for fdisk to do it properly..
