Long thread short, I'll just put up bullet points.
  • Hate the current job with a fiery burning passion of a thousand suns.
  • I want a change in career.
  • Have a BA in Philosophy, skillset does not make me stand out at all. (Here goes a preemptive, "Yes, your hard science PhD is awesome and impressive, good for you; but I'm happy with mine - just doesn't help w/ the job search part, that's all")
  • Wife landed a fairly decent job, enough to support us at this time.
  • Thinking about working part-time and getting some sort of licensing/certification or course (short-term; say, 1 year at the most) for some help.
  • Discussed w/ wife, she says it's okay as long as I hold a part-time job at the very least.
  • A friend of mine strongly suggested actionscript/HTML5 training, my grandmother in-law is pushing for a medical field job (she's thinking nurse but I'm open - what does it take to be an X-ray tech, for instance?), and hell, I'm even thinking air force reserves so I can get some MOS training and veteran's benefits. I was thinking about a masters, but that doesn't really seem to do a lot of good unless you're going for your PhD . . ..
  • Any thoughts/suggestions?

Going hardcore into a fast-trak nursing program takes, I think, one year. It may be the ticket. I'd do that over xray tech, certainly.

I couldn't be a nurse.

Dealing with people who are at their worst, with their family gawking over you. Oh and you just got puked on. No, I couldn't do it.

Actionscript (Flash) is a bit iffy with Adobe under siege from Apple, Microsoft (Silverlight) and the open-source community.

CSS/HTML5/JavaScript is probably more future proof but there are many, many web developers out there with years of experience that you'll be competing with.

No one wants to change bedpans and administer lethal doses of the wrong medication prescribed by sleepwalking residents, so nursing it is.
