Ways to find out what's using my internet connection?

I'm using my dad's computer at home right now, and it's on dialup. I connect at a horrific 28.8k (on a 56k modem) and compared to DSL this is just ridiculous, I had to turn off pictures to browse the internet.

I have been trying to figure out what's wrong with the internet connection, because it looks like its getting used constantly, even when the computer isn't supposed to be using it. I can't even sign on AIM. Once in a while the browser doesn't load up the site and the only way to view it is to refresh.

I'm thinking that my dad surfed too much and got some sort of a virus on this computer. Last time he got a "purple monkey" popping up on the screen. He accidentally installed BonzaiBuddy.

It took an hour, but I downloaded spybot search and destroy and cleaned up the spyware. I suspect that there's something hidden that isn't being shown in the task manager which is taking up the bandwidth. Is there anyway to figure this out without downloading software? I really don't wanna wait another hour to download a program. If that's not possible, can anyone recommend some programs for me?

Thanks in advance.
