Way Too Hot!

My Athlon XP Palomino 1800+ has a problem. In the ECS motherboard, it was reading a cold-boot idle, CPU temp of almost 80 degrees C. I replaced the HS/Fan and almost no change whatsoever. The computer will only boot Windows 1/2 the time and I KNOW that the CPU temp the the BIOS is giving me is bunk. My question, If this temperature is legitimate, then what the hell is goin on? Is there a lavastorm in my box? And if the temperature is not legitimate, then what can I do to adjust the BIOS reading so I stop rebooting/freezing when I boot up a really CPU intensive game, (EQ2). Is there anyway to accomplish these goals.

You are using Thermalpaste right? If so a VERY thin layer as thin as you can get it while keeping it even and the core covered.

Make sure you mounted the HSF right. THe little ridge on the HSF should be on the side with the ridge of the CPU socket.

Leave the computer off for like 5 mins then turn it on and go straight for a temp reading. What is it?

What thermal compound do you have under the heatsink? If it's the stuff that came on the heatsink, it's time to change it. Get some Arctic Silver Ceramique and apply it per the instructions on the AS site. Different processor generations have different application instructions for it. If that still doesn't fix it, I'd say your mobo is on it's way south, or your processor is, and you should start preparing to replace either one, if not both.

Let me guess, he didn't put any TIM between the heatsink and core.

hmmm i put the HS on in the way it fit best, i wasnt really thinking about that ridge..... I guess ill try turning it around. There is thermal paste and I did use the stuff that the HS came with. Approximately how much better is this Ceramique thermal paste?

BTW I restared the computer and it came up with 63 degrees Celsius in the BIOS which i still think is way too much. Ill let you know if the switcheroo on the HS workds

Don't just blindly start turning it around. Refer back to the instructions that came with the processor and/or mobo and do it that way. If you don't have them, you might be able to locate them online. Also, visually inspect how the heatsink is resting on the processor before you pull it off. Keep in mind, IF you remove the heatsink from the processor, you WILL need to replace the thermal compound on it. At that point, you might as well get the AS and do it up right.

As far as how much better is the Ceramique... I've used the retail heatsinks with the pads, I've used them with other compounds, I've used other compounds on aftermarket heatsinks, and from my experience, the AS Ceramique is top notch. When applied properly, it will perform as good, if not better, then anything else out there. Plus, it has the added benefit of not being conductive, so it doesn't matter if you get a little on the board when applying it. The regular compounds are (at least most of them) conductive, so you want to make sure you clean up any 'slop' before you send power through the hardware. With the ASC being so cheap (easy to find a tube for about $5) there's no point in NOT getting it.

IM not blind........

there is fresh thermal paste and the HS/Fan came wiht no instructions. I am 100 percent sure its functioning as it is supposed to now

I was unaware how close the heatsink and processor actually are to each other....

Well a lesson learned thanks to phreak...

thanks again

lol np. Im sure everyone in the forums has made a stupid mistake before. Mine wasn't working rihgt because i had the case fan pointing the wron gdirection over it. I simply couldn't find out why no air was coming out, probably because it was blowing in :p

lol, I have done the same thing, only the computer I was working on simply would not start past the bios. Took me forever to figure out the heatsink was on wrong, one flip and it worked!

PS. Personally I reccomend Artic Silver for the CPU and Ceramique for north bridges and ram chips that don't need epoxy. AS has slightly better cooling properties and on a CPU you have to be pretty sloppy to get it off the core.
