I want to transfer hard disk data from my old pc to my new one without burning all of the information to multiple cdr's. Is this possible?

yes, this is possible..what you want to do is image/mirror the drive. There are software products that make this process easy. What type of drive is the new one? If its a maxtor, I'd recommend there software...

oopss...just realized you may not want all of the system files/etc...but just select data. If thats the case, you have a couple options. You can temporarily hook up the new drive as a slave to the drive on the old system and just drag/drop the files you want, then connect the drive back to the new box (just remember to reset the drive to master).

If you can network the two its even easier--what OS are you using? if its w2k, just right click the drive, select sharing, and select share drive. Then map the old drive on the new computer and again, just drag and drop..

hope this helps..

Shamefully, I've had this for 4 days now and haven't opened it up. Don't know anything about the HD except that its 40GB UATA100 7200 RPM. Checking now though.

I'm back. It's Western Digital. I have a Linksys Etherfast Cable/DSL Router, I should be able to network the 2 pc's with that right?

oh yeah...you're golden. just connect both of em to that router and share the old drive, drag and drop and you're all set...if you have any trouble doing that just let me know what OS you have and i or someone else can walk you through it.

Thanks Milagro. My bad on the OS thing. Just forgot. I'm using Win XP. I'll give the network drag and drop option a shot. Thanks again! :)

Damn! Linksys doesn't provide any of the network cables. Searching to see if I have any around the house, but have to go to work soon. this may have to wait. Damn! :(

I'm attempting to transfer data via milagro's suggestion of a network using a Linksys etherfast cable router. My OS is Win XP and when I go to Network Connections I know I have to highlight the TCP/IP, but in which area? I have 2 choices: 1394 connection or Local area.

You should use local area, since that is what you are trying to set up,.............ie. local area networking.(LAN)

1394 = firewire, I would like to suggest the internal transfer though as it would be faster, just throw the old hdd in the new computer, set it to slave and bam, drag and drop, imo it is easier than hooking everything up to a temporary LAN (I'm assuming it is temporary) and then just sending the files over the LAN.

DaiShan suggestion duly noted, but I just connected the network. Now that I've done that, how do I transfer the files?
