"China is believed to have influence over Sudanese leaders because it buys two-thirds of the African country's oil exports. China also sells weapons to the Islamic government and defends it in the United Nations."

Thought this part was funny as well: ""Western powers can exert more positive influence on those rebel leaders because many of them live in Western capitals," envoy Liu Guijin was quoted as saying in the China Daily newspaper.

Abdel Wahid Nur, one of the most influential rebel leaders, lives in France."

"the American director withdrew from his role as an artistic adviser"

China dodged a bullet on that one.

We should make a deal with Hollywood requesting that Spielberg stays out of international politics and in return Bush will never make a Poltergeist sequel.

Hah, was expecting the typical generic Bush bashing but instead chuckled. Well done.

I love how the Chinese selling weapons to an Islamic Militant government that is widely derided for its severe human rights violations gets brushed under the rug to make for jokes.

I think its more like every idiot in the world knows China will support anyone who will give them oil, so Spielberg is an idiot for ever going there in the first place if he is so caring about human rights issues and all.

Ah. Well that's fine, but at least he got this in the news FWIW. Most people have no idea that the Chinese are so invested in the Sudan. As the problem spreads to neighboring Chad, we really need an improvement. Obviously Spielberg himself isn't going to do anything major, but at least, like I said, he's raising awareness a bit.

Well I despise Hollywood types turning an international sporting event into a fucking political issue. If Spielberg has issues with China he should have done his homework before he signed on and subsequently stomped of in a huff.

You were expecting Bush-bashing from his number one fanboy? That is funny.

You're such a winner. If he stayed on you'd no doubt have accused him of colluding in genocide. You despise Spielberg for calling for peace in darfur? You are so mentally unbalanced.

Who cares? The right gets upset over everything these days... If they didn't have some vendetta against "hollywood" this wouldn't even be in the news.

QFT.

He's a disgrace, IMHO.

EDIT: And no, I don't despise Spielberg for trying to end genocide.

WTF? Where do you guys just make this shit up from?

Geez, Spielberg didn't condemn them for their actions in Tibet and their sbare rattling towards Taiwan. Obviously that means you support China's actions in those departments.

I mean, if we're just going to being pulling accusations out of our ass against forum members purely to be dicks...

That would be stomped "off" in a huff. And why do you assume he didn't do his homework, take the job and quit to draw negative attention to China. How do you know he wasn't hired by the CIA to go for the job. And how do you know he wasn't mind controlled by the lamas?

You forgot to mention the Israelis.

And it's "How do you know he wasn't hired by the CIA to go for the job?"

I wasn't. Read Moonbeam's response again and figure it out, please.

Edit: In case you can't figure it out, let me help you out:

Not that it's not deserved., but I wonder why China gets so much criticism for its support for Sudan. Canada was given a free pass on its Sudan activities in the 90s. Germany is given a free pass on Iran. France is given a free pass on Chad and several other African countries. Why is Spielberg not withdrawing from those countries too?

I am in China now, and this was in the state controlled news quite a bit. I think Spielberg is acting unprofessionally here. He has the right to take a stand on any issue and work for whomever he chooses, however if he is offered an opportunity to work for a client, he should not accept it and then use his resignation as a political PR stunt at the expense of his client.

I'm just glad that Hollywood for once is not criticizing America, it's a welcome change. I gave him props for it.

Might as well make jokes - the US has a long and storied history of the same behavior, so getting pissy about it obviously doesn't change a thing.

Death
Taxes
Superpowers selling arms to brutal dictatorships and Islamic militants

I also don't understand why he took the job in the first place, unless it was to make exactly this point by quitting. I don't like China's foreign policy in this regard, but having your hollywood primadonnas make these 'bold' statements is just wanking. If he really gave a crap he could donate $50 million to the red cross.

Indeed. I had to leabe a mistake in there to show how pedantic he can be when somebody reflects his pedantry. :)

What good are question marks when he answers none of the questions.
