Hi,

A friend of mine has an old 486x system. It has one serial port coming from the motherboard. He asked me if there is a way to have two serial ports on that system. Furthermore, it must work under pure DOS. I do not know if that is possible, where to start searching and where to buy it. Please include the name of the hardware and some good place to start. Brand does not matter as long as it works. Thanks.

Are you sure there's only one? In the old days serial ports came in 9-pin female and 25-pin male varieties. Unless you can find a used one, above board com ports are pricey and hard to find.

AT motherboards usually had 2 serial connectors on it. Retail mobo's came with a packet that contained a 9pin and 25pin serial ports with the cables that connected them to the mobo pins. If the mobo doesn't have 2 serial connectors, you'll probably have to get a ISA add-in board.

You can get ISA serial boards, but the one's I've seen are about $20 for a serial and a parallel port (and I don't know if adding another parallel will cause problems or not). Heck, for $20, you could buy an entire 486 with 2 serial ports, heh =)

Everything I've ever read says it needs a p90 at the very least.
