Way around iPod snafu?? How do I know if my laptop has USB 2.0?

Please don't yell at me for posting in the wrong forum.... I really need an answer and I need it quick so I can jump on a deal.

I have a Dell Inspiron 8200 and a 5 gb generation two laptop which is great but a pain to use because I have to keep switching wires/adapters because the 4-pin firewire it's equipped with cannot charge.

However, I heard elsewhere that the generation 3 iPods with the docks (which both charge AND transfer data) can get around this non-6-pin problem with USB 2.0.

Hence, three questions:

1. Is that (that USB 2.0 will both charge AND transfer data for the windows iPod) true?
2. How do I find out if my laptop has USB 2.0 (I know nothing about data transfer systems or whatever)
3. If it does not have USB 2.0, can I have it installed?

Thanks for any help.

1. no, usb 2.0 will not charge, only transfer. You still need to either use the socket to do that or a 6pin firewire (which incidentially you can hookup for power even if you are just using the usb for transfers)

ok so then i guess the question is:

is there ANY way to get a six-pin firewire installed onto a laptop or are there any (non-mac) laptops with six pin firewires which will suitably charge/transfer data to an ipod dock?

Yes, USB 2.0 CAN charge. This is not debatable, its CAN. 🙂 Now, that being said, I don't know if the ipod in specific can be charged via USB2. I know the Jukebox Zen can.
