Paper shopping bag and an iron.

Chip off as much as you can and then put the bag on top of the the wax. Put the iron on the bag (when it's warm/hot). The iron melts the wax and the bag absorbs the melted wax. You'll have to use several different sections of the bag.

That one caught me blindside. Time to get some paper towels.

The iron doesn't need to be hot enough to burn the carpet, just hot enough to melt wax. Plus, you shouldn't need to hold the iron on the paper for very long as, once the wax is warm, it will transfer to the paper fairly easily.

Complete instructions.

Although personally, I would use ice to freeze the big blob of wax and remove it that way. I would only use the iron method if it had soaked into the carpet.
