I have a new Samsung SyncMaster 740B LCD display (1280x1024 pixels) and an onboard Intel display adapter as part of an Asus motherboard.

When I run Windows with the latest (to the best of my knowledge) drivers for both the monitor and the display adapter, at 16bit and with a refresh rate of 60 Hertz, bright areas on the screen show faint moving wave patterns. When I choose a higher refresh rate, the waves disappear, but the image becomes noticably less sharp.

I do not have experience this problem when I run Linux on the same machine with the same refresh rate, resolution and color depth.

What can be causing this problem and is there anything I can do to solve it?

This is on a VGA or DVI connection? Maybe it doesn't occur on Linux because there's slight variations in refresh rates. I notice if my vertical rate is a fraction of a Hz off in Windows, the mouse will jitter every few frames. Reinforcing 60.00 Hz in the NVIDIA advanced refresh rate dialog helps but I don't know how to do that with an Intel GPU. Such variations have also caused 'lines' on some Dell monitors. I think it could be part of your problem. In any case, a $50 card with a good DVI output is a good investment. I would put the blame on the GPU, but it's possible it could be the cable if you're using VGA.
