I was given one when I had braces. I didn't find it especially useful. The pressure is fairly low so that it doesn't cause pain, and it's noisy. I'd just floss or use the little brushes available in the toothpaste aisle. After I stopped using it, my dad found that it's good for cleaning fingernails, or just very small items that might need a tiny jet of water.
Unfortunately, I broke the end of the hose while trying to remove one of the attachments. Darn cheap plastic parts.

I got a really powerful one that made my gums bleed.

I recently picked up a Sonicare, it's great. I still floss though and a waterpik never was very appealing.

If the pump can handle lower viscosity fluids (i.e. spirits, organic solvents) then they make good small parts washers. ;)

I loved mine when I had braces. If you get a nice one it will have variable pressure settings so you can set it to however powerful you need.

If it made your gums bleed, your gums are weak and need to be strengthened. My gums bled when I first bought my Sonicare and now they don't anymore.

I like the waterpick I have. I got a tank that is split into 2 compartments, fill one with water, the other with mouthwash to alternate.

not as effective as flossing. :)

waterpik is more for blowing out chunks than removing sticky plaque.

It's okay. Takes too long to clean with one. Much better to use floss and spent that same amount of time, does a much better job.
