If you're going to jerry-rig something together, don't bother in your current situation. Might be a little messy for your college quarters.

Buy a spiffy pre-built kit, like a Koolance kit, or something similar.

And it does look pimp if done right.

"Does anyone do it here?"

Definitely. I see drunk/stoned/pregnant college students every day.

"Would you recommend it?"

Absolutely if you want it/need it/can afford it.

"Is it just a big pain in the ass?"

Yeah, 'specially when you spring a leak and fry your rig.

One other thing. If you decide to do this, I would recommend using flat beer as your coolant as it is far cheaper than water in a college environment, or so it seems.

The only reason I ask is because I will be off to college next year and I was going to watercool my case... then i realize it could be a pain in the ass.

Thanks!

Was it the booze, drugs, or sex?

Seriously, if you're not planning on overclocking, you don't need it. If you are, you can get some serious OCs with air cooling by using a quality HSF and good case cooling.

He's likely going to be in a dorm room sleeping about 4 ft from his sys, he doesn't want to listen to it all the time. Watercooling can be far far far quieter then conventional, and I know you can get full wattercooled sys and only spend $100 more then a conventionally cooled sysstem (and that's CDN pricing).

Actually I o/c quite a bit with my current air setup, but to be honest, i hate the noise of fans. On top of it all a great deal fell at me ($60 for quality radiator, resivour, pump, clamps, hoses, etc. Everything but the waterblock). I've seen watercooling rigs in action and with a rheostat on them they can be so quiet.

The noise from fans will likely be the quietest thing in your college environment.
