It's a basic fridge made by GE. Freezer on top, refrigerator on the bottom. no ice maker. It's 15yrs old.

months ago water started dripping near where the light bulb is in the refrigerator. i emptied out the freezer but couldnt find where water would leak from.

Where is the water coming from?
And how to fix the leak?

Sounds like it might be part of the defrosting system. I don't know how that works, but I'd look there. Maybe a blocked hose or something.

Adjust the the temp in the freezer downward until the water freezes. Freezers are for freezing, there should be no liquid water or it isn't a freezer. Also check on top of fridge to see if someone might have left a severed head dripping blood up there.

This.

We had a leak in our freezer side and it turned out to be a water dispenser hose that runs somewhere along the freezer in the insulation, which it doesn't sound like you have being it doesn't have an ice maker.

There's often a hose that runs down to the drip pan under the fridge, where the water evaporates from. That hose is likely clogged. I don't know what specific model you have, so I wouldn't be able to figure out, without being there, how you're going to clean it out.

Simple fix--the drain from the freezer to the refrigerator portion is plugged with ice. Unplug the refrigerator and allow the unit to completely defrost. You can speed up the process by using a hair dryer on the lowest heating setting. Do not use the hot setting or you could mess up the freezer by melting the plastic liner.

If you are lucky, the refrigerator should work properly.

If you are unlucky, the fridge needs a new defroster unit. The ice box will continue to leak. The cost of the fix is close to the price of a whole new fridge.

(We had the same leak a few months ago. We got lucky.)

how long does it take for a freezer to completely defrost? (ie: leaving the freezer door open while the refrigerator door closed)

Either empty it out and unplug it for a few days (leaving doors open) or if that doesn't work the drain tube is filled with mold and you gotta blow it out with compressed air.

This.

I had this happening with my GE fridge in my apartment. I talked to my apartment people and they said it was the return line. They came, fixed it and all is now well.

It's nice to finally be able to use my crispers :p.

It's a shared system...you aren't going to have much refridgeration going on with the freezer open. I'd whittle down your provisions and then when ready put the leftovers in a cooler and move the fridge outside on a sunny day.

You are looking at several hours at normal room temp for a full defrost usually at best...

The serviceman said it could take up to 10 to 12 hours for the freezer to completely defrost on its own with just unplugging it. With some gentle help from a hair dryer, the process could be reduced to an hour or two.

make sure you leave the door open when you have it turned off. Or it will STINK
