Water in Mexico....

Scarpozzi

Lifer
Is there anything you can take before you go to Mexico that will help you get used to the bacteria? I guess my real question is.....is it possible to get an immunity to the bacteria? I'm thinking about going back this year and don't want my system tore up again...

BTW....last time I went, I only drank bottled water and alcohol. All I can figure is that some of the food I ate was contaminated or the dishes/cups were washed in the water without being bleached.

The locals in the very small village we were in all drank bottled water. In fact, I watched one young kid with a 5 gallong jug on his bicycle seat while he sat on the rear shelf.

That's gotta say something.

Nope. I lived down there for half a year. Even in the abolute poorest areas, they distribute water from trucks.

I wish I could take every SOB on this forum down to the colonias inside the garbage dumps down there.....might put things a little more into perspective.

the only way to become immune would be to just drink the water and get sick a few times. your body will do the rest.

Just drink bottled water while you are there... if you go out, ask for all drinks without ice cubes...

you will be fine... bottled water is plentiful.

If you REALLY want to drink the local water (not too sure why, even the locals don't)... get some iodine tabs or put a couple of drops of iodine in your water. That should kill most bacterias.

find out about the water from the locals. environmental regulations in mexico are not as stringent as those in the US. you might have to worry about more than just bacteria.

All food everywhere has bacteria growing on it. The bacteria in mexico are just different. When you go anywhere unusual, you risk food poisening, just because the bacteria are different. You rarely get food poisining at home, because your used to all the bacteria that live there. I, for instance, have lived in tucson for a year, so I can eat anything in mexico and not get sick. You just need to eat a few meals, maybe get sick, and you'll get used to the bacteria.

just beware of refilled bottles

i was told to eat yougart every day for 2 weeks before visiting. i guess the cultures in the yougart help

Imodium is your friend. Don't eat food from street vendors; try to avoid fresh foods like salads or fruit if you can. Mexicans can't drink the water either but they can tolerate a lot more contact with it. They can brush their teeth with it for ex.

It's also very, very easy for to get dehydrated in a place where you're so suspicious of water - you'll unconciously avoid feeling thirsty. Make sure you're getting enough fluids and electrolytes, especially if you drink a lot of booze.

I agree. I don't know if it would be enough to stop the avg person that grew up in the USA from getting sick but it'll definitely help. If possible, eat organic yogurt or yogurt smoothies. They have more live cultures.

GNC also has acidophilus (sp?) pills which I believe are the same bacteria cultures found in yogurt. So I imagine you can take some now and also take them with you to Mexico.

That wouldn't be a good idea. There's stuff you can get from that water that will never leave your system. I know peeps having issues over a decade after getting sick.

What kind of stuff can you get that never leaves your system? I'm just curious. Last time I went, I thought I might have gotten some parasites so I started taking walnut seed oil with water for a few weeks. It didn't do anything, but was worth a shot to be on the safe side. I'm just curious what all you could "get stuck with" down there.

& don't eat lettuce or things you can't peel. Don't take ice in drinks.

No joke.

Amoebic intestinal infection can make you wonder if you'd be better off dead.
