Water heater question

my family and I just got back from a 1-month vacation. I noticed that the drain pipe ( i think that's what its called) from my water heater has been leaking. Is this normal or maybe its just a result for not using our heater for a month? We live in this house for over 3 yrs. now and this is the 1st time this thing has happened.

can somebody educate me on this? TIA!!!

Are you talking about the valve on the side of the tank with a pipe coming out of it running to the floor?

The drian is also on the side, but at the bottom of the tank.

You mean the small pipe attacjed to your pressure relief valve which is there so the tank doesn't over pressurize and burst. It should not be leaking.

The drain on mine is leaking too not the pressure relief valve. Its suppost to be easy to replace but you have to drain the heater to do it. From what my dad told me the whole pipe/valve thing just unscrews and you just get a new one. I just stuck a pot under it and pour it out once a week 🙂. I'll fix it in the spring.
